Collaborating with the Horizon Council, the Lee County Economic Development Office and the School District, we will bring Career Days to every eighth grade district school student in the county. In a class of 30 high school freshmen, 8 will drop out of high school, 9 will graduate and receive no further education and 13 will start postsecondary education/training. 6 of those will drop out within year one, 2 will drop out between years 2-4 and 2 will graduate but not find jobs in their fields. This program will encourage the students to look at themselves and start thinking about their future.
Pre and post curriculum are added to a day with guest speakers from a broad area of career choices including: Building Construction & Design, Medical and Healthcare, Business/Finance/IT Marketing, Engineering and Manufacturing, and Public Service.
Students in each zone will view a custom designed, fast paced video outlining different careers and their
relative courses of study and expected salary ranges. Guest speakers are added to coincide with the video and give a live presentation of their local careers. After this, students tour the comprehensive high school, and its career academy areas. A comprehensive high school enhances the traditional high school curriculum. Students not only select from the traditional academic and extracurricular program, but they have the opportunity to pursue a specialized program within a Technical and Career Education Academy.
